Mayor moving forward with second-term agenda

Bates scores biggest mayoral win in nearly 40 years

“We are really happy with the way things are going,” Bates said. “We are going to turn a new leaf in Berkeley.” Bates' victory was the result of a centrist campaign that gained the unprecedented endorsements of both sides of the Berkeley political divide -- the Berkeley Democratic Club, home of the city's "moderate" faction, and its archrival, the "progressive" Berkeley Citizens Action. "It's a very encouraging sign,'' Bates said. ``I really hope that this means that we've turned a page in Berkeley politics and we can work together on Berkeley politics.'' "We're very optimistic," said Bates on Tuesday night. "It's very rewarding. It looks like the city has turned a new page, and we're looking forward to working together on the myriad of challenges ahead."
